Urge Singaporeans to learn more languages: Minister

Singapore Education Minister, Mr Ong Yu Kung, recently highlighted the importance of learning a 3rd language to about 40 students from 21 schools. The discussion was held at the Ministry of Education language centre in Bishan, where Mr Ong (EU Ambassador to Singapore Barbara Plinkert) and ambassadors from Finland, France, Germany, Italy and Romania spoke about the importance of foreign languages in a globalised world.

Why are we talking about learning a 3rd or 4th language, while countries in South East Asia are only starting to realise the benefits of being bilinguals?

Because, as an Island nation with no natural resources and only around 5 million people to depend on, we simply cannot afford to rest on our laurels.

In fact, countries like China, Korea and Japan around 30 years ago were already rushing to learn English and making great strides. A typical Korean for example will spend around 10 years studying English in School. Most Koreans under the age of 40 will have had English education in school and be able to speak fluent English

Time and tide wait for no one.

If you start learning now, you will reap the benefits later.

In fact, if you are 25 years old, you could use your SkillsFuture credits to pay for your Beginner course.

So what are you really waiting for?
